


ABOUT THE COMMITTEE:
The Security Council is the executive body of the United Nations whose main responsibility
as laid out by Chapter V of the UN Charter is to maintain international peace and security.
The Security Council is designed to respond quickly and decisively to spontaneous outbursts
of conflicts and a representative of each of its members must be present At all times at United Nations Headquarters. The Security Council comprises 15 member states, as per Article 23 of the UN Charter: 5 Permanent Members, which enjoy the veto power, and 10 non-permanent states, which are elected for terms lasting two years. The five permanent states (collectively known as the P5) are the United States of America, the Russian Federation, the French Republic, the People’s Republic of China and the United Kingdom. When a complaint concerning a threat to peace is brought before it, the Council’s first action is usually to recommend to the parties to try to reach to agreement by peaceful means. In some cases, the council Itself undertakes investigation and mediation.
